New frontiers in drilling and production

Book ·
OSTI ID:5965810

One series of articles deals with offshore platform design options which are described and evaluated for space, weight, safety, cost, and layout restraints. Other factors considered are flared and vent systems, water treatment, personnel support and safety systems. A giant offshore structure, designed for use in the Maui field, which is 30 miles from the coast of New Zealand, is discussed. Its construction, assembly, and installation are described. Drilling in remote locations presents special problems. Major factors include planning, method of purchasing materials, proper shipping, and air transportation. The basic problems of blowout control occur worldwide and basic blowout-control theory and procedures are directly applicable to marine drilling operations. Offshore tunnel-chamber production systems for recovery of hydrocarbon reserves in offshore Arctic areas are described. A number of techniques are under development for onshore and offshore operations in the Arctic where severe environmental problems are encountered. For other parts of the world, other specific types of platforms and drilling techniques are described.
