Edward Noble, chairman of the Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SFC) board of directors, was the principal witness at an oversight hearing that focused on recent events and the resignation of Victor Thompson from the presidency under conflict of interest challenges. At issue were the board's operating procedures and the corporation's high cost to taxpayers. Critics of the synthetic fuels program pointed to the continuing vulnerability of oil sources and the need to make progress on alternative fuels. Others noted that the problems have been due to faulty management rather than an inherent failure in the program's concept. Additional correspondence submitted for the record by the SFC follows the testimony of three board members and two members of Congress.
