Progress was made on computer simulation of high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) images and the development of thin foil specimens of very clean alumina which we are using to study directly the movement of grain boundaries. We have continued to make steady progress on our experimental studies of grain boundaries in bulk Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, spinel and Ge.
