Brookhaven experiment 787: The search for K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +//nu//bar nu/

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5961101
A description is presented of E-787's rare K decay spectrometer and the search for the rare decay K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +//nu//bar /nu//, expected in the Standard Model to have a branching ratio of (1 /minus/ 8) /times/ 10/sup /minus/10/. Preliminary results are presented from the 1988 run of E-787. We are able to set the 90% confidence level upper limits: BR(K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +/ /nu//bar /nu//) < 3 /times/ 10/sup /minus/8/, BR(K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +/f) < 6 /times/ 10/sup /minus/9/, BR(K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +//mu//sup +//mu//sup /minus//) < 2.1 /times/ 10/sup /minus/7/, BR(K/sup +/ /yields/ /pi//sup +/H) /times/ BR(H /yields/ /mu//sup +//mu//sup /minus//) < 1.5 /times/ 10/sup /minus/7/, BR(/pi//sup 0/ /yields/ /nu//bar /nu//) < 8 /times/ 10/sup /minus/7/, where f is any massless, neutral, weakly interacting particle and H is a Higgs boson with 2m/sub /mu// < m/sub H/ < 320 MeV/c/sup 2/. Further running is in process and we hope to accumulate an approximately ten times larger data sample in 1989. 15 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.
