The perpendicular components /sigma//sub 11/ and /sigma//sub 22/ of the shielding tensor of the /sup 199/Hg nuclei in powdered HgCl/sub 2/ (II), Hg(CN)/sub 2/ (II), and iso-C/sub 3/H/sub 7/HgCl (III) have been measured by /sup 199/Hg NMR. In the case of I, the components /sigma//sub 11/ and /sigma//sub 22/ are identical (/minus/4276 /plus minus/ 15 ppm relative to a free mercury atom), in agreement with the maintenance of the axial symmetry in the molecular crystal. In II and III these components are different (/minus/4493 /plus minus/ 5 and 4463 /plus minus/ 5 ppm in II, /minus/5006 /plus minus/ 20 and /minus/4906 /plus minus/ 20 ppm in III). The region of the powder-pattern line shape could not be observed for the component /sigma//sub 33/. Estimates of /sigma//sub 33/ have been obtained on the basis of data on the chemical shifts of /sup 199/Hg in solution. Utilization of the data on the structures of I and II in the crystalline state and the results of the measurements of /triangle//sigma/ for II and five other linear molecules in solution has made it possible to conclude that the intermolecular interactions in crystals, in which the vacant Hg 6p AOs participate in the formation of additional coordinate bonds, cause a decrease in /triangle//sigma/ by increasing the paramagnetic contribution /sigma//sub 33/.
