A multiprocessor with shared memory contains a number of processors that share part of the available memory. The processors can execute distinct programs as well as cooperate in the same application by using the shared memory for process communication. This makes them suitable for a broad range of application. The past few years have seen an increasing interest in shared-memory multiprocessors. Several new multiprocessors have been announced every year. One of the main problems with this type of computer, however, is how to avoid performance degradation due to the memory sharing. Although there are other important design issues, this article concentrates on the techniques we can use to design a memory system that reduces the impact of contention. To exemplify the techniques, the author reviews 10 implementations and the design decisions taken in each.
