Dye-laser-induced luminescence excitation spectra and excited-state-lifetime measurements on solutions of europium(III) chloride and sodium oxydiacetate (ODA) reveal the presence of three complexes: Eu(ODA)(H/sub 2/O)/sub 2//sup +/, Eu(ODA)/sub 2/(H/sub 2/O)/sub 3//sup -/, and Eu(ODA)/sub 3//sup 3 -/. The X-ray structure of monoclinic Na/sub 3/(Eu(ODA)/sub 3/).6H/sub 2/O has been determined (space group Cc, a = 17.542 (4) A, b = 8.474 (2) A, c = 19.181 (3) A, ..beta.. = 111.46 (2)/sup 0/, Z = 4) and is compared with the known structure for Na/sub 3/(Eu(ODA)/sub 3/).2NaClO/sub 4/.6H/sub 2/O (space group R32, a = 9.7391 (18) A, b = 28.2012 (74) A). The spectroscopic results are consistent with the crystallographic metal ion site symmetries (C/sub 1/ and D/sub 3/, respectively). The Eu(ODA)/sub 3//sup 3 -/ solution species resembles the high symmetry crystalline form. 28 references, 2 figures, 5 tables.
