Electrochemical behavior of Ta(V) in molten LiCl-KCl and the effect of fluoride ion on it

This paper studies the cathodic processes in a LiCl-KCl-TaCl/sub 5/ melt in order to refine the electrochemical behavior of tantalum in chloride melts. The electrolytic cell and the experimental technique are fundamentally described. The titration of a LiC1-KC1 melt containing the lower tantalum chloride, TaCl/sub 3/ with fluoride ion also leads to the formation in the melt of primarily TaF/sub 7//sup 2 -/ complex. The stabilization of the higher valence state of the tantalum is accompanied by the disproportionation of Ta/sup 3 +/ to metallic tantalum and Ta/sup 5 +/.
