Boron silicide synthesis from the elements
Electron spin resonance, chemical, and x-ray data have been used in examining structuring in B-Si mixtures corresponding to B/sub 4/Si, B/sub 6/Si, and B/sub 14/Si as the treatment temperature is raised. Solid solutions of Si in B and B in Si are formed. There is a limiting concentration for solid solutions of Si in B, which indicates that the corresponding phases are formed from solid solutions of B in Si, which go over to the amorphous state at high B concentrations. The decomposition of B/sub 4/Si above 1470 K is accompanied by the formation of amorphous silicon layers on the B/sub 6/Si grains, which subsequently become partially crystalline. A scheme has been proposed for the structural and phase transitions.
