Role of elastic mismatch in the mechanical amorphization of elemental metallic powder mixtures
- L. Kossuth Univ., Debrecen (Hungary). Dept. of Solid State Physics
In the present paper the authors derived a simple, general condition for amorphization of an elemental metallic powder mixture. To find this condition they investigated the cases in which the energy of the solid solution, formed during the milling process, can be raised above the energy of the amorphous state. Estimating the change in the internal energies (U) they make a clear distinction between the purely chemical and purely elastic terms accompanied with the formation of solid or amorphous solutions. The contribution from GB energy will be also taken into account and estimated. It was shown that in the general condition for amorphization the chemical terms cancel and thus they have to give estimations for the elastic energies, the heat of the topological change during crystalline to amorphous transition and for the GB energies only. It was illustrated that the condition of amorphization can be expressed in a useful simple form, giving regions of concentrations, where the formation of amorphous alloys or solid solutions are expected. They compared their results with experimental data on ball milling of different elemental powder mixtures.
