The alkylation of methylenedimalonic ester with methylene bromide, dibromoethane, and 1,3-dibromopropane in the presence of potassium carbonate in DMSO is a convenient method for the synthesis of 1,1,3-3-tetraethoxycarbonylcycloalkanes. The alkylation of acetonedicarboxylide ester leads to the products from either C,C- or C,O-alkylation, depending on the halide and on the reaction conditions.
