The roles of the thallium mono and bi layers in the superconducting series TlBa{sub 2}Ca{sub n{minus}1}-Cu{sub n}O{sub 2n+3} and Tl{sub 2}Ba{sub 2}Ca{sub n{minus}1}Cu{sub n}O{sub 2n+4} are studied within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Expressions for the transition temperatures in terms of phenomenological parameters are obtained. To achieve a consistent interpretation of the increases in the T{sub c}'s of the members of the two series, it must be assumed that the TlO layers behave in different ways in the two series.
