Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)

Users need to be aware of a number of financing considerations and risks that are specific to cogeneration. Among the considerations are the user's energy needs, cost of fuel, and local utility buyback rates and attitude toward cogeneration. The risks include the effects of long-term debt on users and investors, fluctuating fuel prices during the life of the financing contract, and changing in utility buyback rates. Users also face the uncertainty of cogeneration laws and regulations. Financing is available through equipment manufacturers, project developers, or third-party investors. Examples of their methods include joint ventures, shared savings, leases, and third-party ownership. A directory lists 25 energy service financing firms.
