Experimental data obtained in inelastic and central nucleus--nucleus collisions are presented on the following average multiplicities: the total charged-particle multiplicity , the multiplicity of interacting protons , the multiplicity of interacting protons of the incident nucleus , the multiplicity of interacting nucleons of the target nucleus <..nu../sub t/>, and also the ratios /, where is the average multiplicity of negative pions. The data were obtained in the two-meter streamer chamber SKM-200 exposed in beams of /sup 4/He, /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, and /sup 20/Ne at energy 3.6 GeV/nucleon in targets of C, Ne, Al, Si, Cu, Zr, and Pb. A systematic investigation is made of the influence on the observed results of the rigidity of selection of central collisions, which is characterized by a trigger T(theta/sub c//sub h/,theta/sub n/), where theta/sub c//sub h/ and theta/sub n/ are the minimum permissible emission angles respectively of charged and neutral spectator fragments of the incident nucleus. For all ensembles of events corresponding cross sections are given. The procedure for analysis of the data is presented. Sources of possible systematic errors are discussed, and estimates of the uncertainties due to them are given.
