Southern Natural modernizes its gas compressor stations

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)

This paper describes how more fuel-efficient gas turbines are taking the place of horizontal compressors which served a gas utility for 50 years. It shows that horizontal engines were labor intensive, fuel inefficient, and that reliability was suspect. It discusses engine block removal, pulsation and manpower requirements. It concludes that the modernization has resulted in plentiful gas supplies, and due to increased load factors, 4 additional 1,300-hp units are being replaced.
