Compressor station modernization: the key is cutting fuel costs

Journal Article · · Pipeline Gas J.; (United States)

Given the high price of natural gas in the field, in the pipeline, at the city gate, and at the customer meter, a new awareness has arisen. Pipeline operators know that most compressor stations were designed and built when gas was cheap. Now they are seeking ways to improve operating efficiency and to cut fuel costs. Modernization of compressor stations, including replacing or rebuilding/overhauling individual compressor units, is an attractive answer. But capital costs are also a major worry. As a result, gas transmission pipeline company compressor superintendents have to juggle both problems to find solutions. This article comprises interviews with six top operating managers concerned with compressor operations and their views on station modernization.
