2-Phenylethanol undergoes dehydration to styrene and to bis(2-phenylethyl) ether under both thermolysis and aquathermolysis conditions: small amounts of reduction and elimination of the side chain also occur. Phenylacetic acid is thermolyzed to form dibenzyl ketone and toluene, but the reaction is inhibited by water although a small amount of decarboxylation is observed in the presence of base. Phenylacetaldehyde is highly reactive and forms a wide variety of higher molecular weight products under both thermolysis and aquathermolysis conditions, mostly arising via aldol condensation reactions.
