Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3} in its defect fluorite structure exhibits exceptional oxygen conductivity behavior. The conductivity and phase equilibria was investigated for the Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3} - Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} - Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} ternary system over a range of compositions of {ge} 76 mol% Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}. The relative stability of a fluorite structure where it exists metastably was also investigated. Reactions between the Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3} based electrolytes with their platinum electrodes were found which greatly affected the conductance.
