Energy base of the communist-socialist countries

Journal Article · · Am. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5941084
The analysis of energy situations in three Communist-Socialist geographic entities covers the Soviet Union, China, and the Warsaw Pact countries of Eastern Europe. It is important that their energy problems be solved because of the implications for the West and Japan. The energy resources, production, consumption, and mix are detailed and compared for each. China differs from the Soviet Union, which appears to be using foreign technology to develop domestic energy, by openly seeking help from Japan and the West. National pride and policies have kept both countries isolated from world energy markets. The fact that eastern Europe's energy mix requires oil imports means that the USSR must allocate goods and capital to transport energy. The region's small amount of reserves will make it an increasing energy burden on the Soviet Union. 22 references, 7 figures, 4 tables. (DCK)
