Spectral characteristics of absorption and ionization in transitions to the continuum and to autoionizing states
A discussion of continuous spectrum and autoionizing levels includes an examination of the characteristics of the continuum and of the autoionizing states. Matrix elements of transitions to the continuum, and spin-orbit interaction in the continuum are reviewed. The effects of spin-orbit interaction on the matrix elements of a transition are described by a wave form that is presented. A review and discussion of photoabsorption probability, photoionization and recombination cross sections in the absence of autoinizing levels are given. Oscillator strength for transition to the continuum is examined. The spectral characteristics of the cross section for photoionization of hydrogenlike atoms in the absence of spin-orbit interaction is also presented. The Fano theory as it pertains to discrete level in a continuum, is discussed. Basic equations are given for the probability amplitudes and for the density matrix. Certain methods of solving the basic equations are provided.
