Journal Article · · J. Sov. Laser Res.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5074879
A discussion is presented of the spectral characteristics of absorption and ionization in transitions to the continuum and to autoionizing states (from the discrete), as when an atom absorbs a photon whose energy exceeds the ionization energy and when molecules are ionized or dissociated. Also treated in detail are: matrix elements of transitions to the continuum, photoabsorption probability, photoionization and recombination cross-sections in the absence of autoionizing levels, polarization and angular distribution of photoelectrons, the Fano Theory (discrete level in a continuum), nonstationary theory of interaction of discrete states with a continuum, and spectral characteristics of the absorption coefficient, the refractive index, and of the autoionizing cross-sections at transition frequencies.
