Effects of air pollution on vegetation

A historical perspective is presented on air pollution; identifying the time frame within which various air pollutants became identifiable problems. Sulfur dioxide, fluorides, smog, ozone, PAN, and ethylene are treated in detail. Other pollutants of occasional concern as phytotoxicants are identified as: nitrogen oxides, chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia. The types of injury caused by specific pollutants are identified, and the factors that contribute to plant sensitivity to air pollutants are listed. The use of plants as air pollution monitoring systems is discussed. 7 references.
