Spectroscopy of high spin states in /sup 16/O and /sup 20/Ne using the (/sup 12/C,/sup 8/Be)(. cap alpha. /sub 0/) reaction
Spins, parities, and ..cap alpha../sub 0/-decay branching ratios have been determined for a number of states in /sup 16/O and /sup 20/Ne using the /sup 12/C(/sup 12/C,/sup 8/Be)/sup 16/O* (..cap alpha../sub 0/)/sup 12/C and /sup 16/O(/sup 12/C,/sup 8/Be)/sup 20/Ne* (..cap alpha../sub 0/)/sup 16/O reactions. The /sup 8/Be nuclei were detected at 0/sup 0/, and the alpha particles from the decay of the excited states formed in the (/sup 12/C,/sup 8/Be) reactions were detected over the range 40/sup 0/ < or = theta/sub lab/ < or = 97/sup 0/, typically corresponding to a range in the heavy-recoil center-of-mass system of 50/sup 0/ < or = theta/sub RCM/ < or = 120/sup 0/. Structure observed at an excitation energy of 22.5 +- 0.5 MeV in /sup 16/O appears to correspond to an 8/sup +/ state which is then a candidate for identification as the 8/sup +/ member of the K/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup +/, 4p-4h rotational band. In /sup 20/Ne we have confirmed a number of spin assignments for states below 16 MeV in excitation, and in addition we have made the following assignments: 16.63 MeV (7/sup -/), 17.3 MeV (8/sup +/), 21.08 MeV (9/sup -/), and 22.87 MeV (9/sup -/). All of the ..cap alpha../sub 0/ branching ratios for the strongly populated states in /sup 20/Ne are found to be roughly 100%, with the exception of those for the 17.3 MeV (8/sup +/) and 21.08 MeV (9/sup -/) levels which are found to be 40% and 65%, respectively.
