Linear polarization of the continuum. gamma. rays feeding high-spin yrast states in /sup 151/ /sup 152/Dy and /sup 156--158/Er

We have measured the linear polarization, P/sub ..gamma../, of continuum ..gamma.. rays for /sup 151,152/Dy and /sup 156en-dash158/Er produced through (/sup 32/S,xn) reactions. We find that P/sub ..gamma../ approx. = 0.35 for E/sub ..gamma../ < or = 1.2 MeV in the rotational Er nuclei and, in contrast, that P/sub ..gamma../ approx. = 0.05 doe E/sub ..gamma../ < or = 1.0 MeV in the oblate Dy isotopes. This, taken together with the spectrum shapes of the contiuum ..gamma.. rays, suggests a rather direct feeding of the yrast states by statistical cascades. The Dy data for 1.0 < or = E/sub ..gamma../ < or = 1.5 MeV indicate collective rotations at spin I>40h.
