Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) units find best application in the larger industrial capacity range - between 100,000 to 600,000 lb/hr. Below this, the more conventional bubbling-bed design is usually more economic. However, for large electric utility plants, the bubbling bed also represents the best choice. In each case, site-specific requirements such as cogeneration capability as well as fuel availability and cost, play an important role in the decision process. The major difference between the CFB and the bubbling bed designs is that in the CFB, higher air velocity through the combustion zone allows small particles of burning fuel, limestone and ash to flow upward through the furnace. The increased thermal capacity of the circulating particles and hot gases produces a near constant temperature throughout the furnace, thus maintaining combustion and sulfur capture reactions for a significantly longer time than in non-circulating fluidized bed designs. The advantages of the CFB are discussed.
