New Rolls-Royce for industry

Journal Article · · Energy Process./Can.; (United States)

The demand for more efficient gas turbines has caused Rolls-Royce (Canada) Ltd. to introduce an industrial model of its Spey gas generator. The compact, light, two-spool generator produces the same horsepower as the Avon but with a 25% higher efficiency. When coupled with an 85% efficient power turbine, the Spey has the following performance characteristics; power, 16,200 bhp; specific fuel consumption, 7478 Btu/bhp-h; exhaust-gas mass flow, 124 lb/s; and exhaust-gas total temperature, 1141/sup 0/F. Operation of the Spey as the energy source in a standard pipeline-compressor package has demonstrated that these characteristics have been achieved.
