The computed 1977 manufacturing costs (in dollars per million Btu) are 4.51 for medium-Btu gas (in a small plant), 5.00 for SNG, 4.72 for gasoline (as a main product), and 3.35 for fuel oil or syncrude, although the literature indicates slightly lower costs. From the literature, the average operating costs (in dollars per million Btu) are 0.63 for high-Btu gas, 0.515 for a plant that produces mainly gasoline, and 0.265 when the main product is fuel oil and naphtha. The computations, which are only approximate, are based on published compilations of thermal efficiencies and capital costs of coal conversion plants, and assume coal prices of $10/ton for 8000 Btu/lb western coal and $20/ton for 12,000 Btu/lb eastern coal as well as 14%/yr state and federal taxes. Handling of investment-related overhead costs is discussed. 11 references.
