Lifetimes of states in the regular [Delta][ital I]=1 band in [sup 197]Pb have been measured with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Excited states in [sup 197]Pb were populated using the [sup 154]Sm([sup 48]Ca, 5[ital n]) reaction at [ital E][sub [ital b]]=210 MeV. The target consisted of 1 mg/cm[sup 2] 54Sm evaporated onto a 10 mg/cm[sup 2] Au backing. Discernible lineshapes for [gamma] rays in the energy range 300[lt][ital E][sub [gamma]][lt]500 keV in the regular band were observed in a spectroscopic study with the 20 Ge-detector array, HERA. Level lifetimes were obtained from a lineshape analysis. Averaged reduced transition strengths, [ital B]([ital M]1)[similar to]1.7 W.u. and [ital B]([ital E]2)[similar to]18 W.u., are deduced and these are compared with theoretical predictions for the suggested configuration of this band.
