The existence of the compounds SrZrO/sub 3/, Sr/sub n/Zr/sub n-1/O/sub 3n-2/ (where n = 2, 3, 4) and eutectics with the compositions 38 mole % SrO + 62 mole % ZrO/sub 2/ and 77 mole % SrO + 23 mole % ZrO/sub 2/ in the system ZrO/sub 2/-SrO was confirmed. With the help of petrography it was established that SrZrO/sub 3/ forms through metastable cubic solid solutions based on ZrO/sub 2/. Synthesis of the compounds Sr/sub n/Zr/sub n-1/O/sub 3n-2/ (n = 2, 3, 4) occurs owing to the interaction of SrZrO/sub 3/ with strontium oxide. The compounds Sr/sub 4/Zr/sub 3/O/sub 10/ and Sr/sub 2/ZrO/sub 4/ could not be obtained in an individual state. Synthesis of these compounds is a complicated, stepped process requiring high temperatures and long holding periods. Samples with the ratio SrO/ZrO/sub 2/ > 1 hydrate in air, which complicates their practical application.
