Air pollution damage to Christmas trees in western Maryland and adjacent West Virginia: a sign of damage to the forest environment

Air pollutants are severely damaging Christmas tree plantations that lie among the forests of Western Maryland and adjacent West Virginia. The Christmas tree species affected in this area were: eastern white pine, Scots pine, Austrian pine, Virginia pine, Norway spruce, Douglas-fir, and red pine. This damage is a warning that air pollution is not only causing harm to the forests but may also be altering the total environment. The purpose of this report is to present the current situation on damage to trees - those that are growing in Christmas tree plantations in the air pollution area.
