Thin films of the intermetallic compounds AuAl/sub 2/ and AuIn/sub 2/ prepared and used as electrodes in AuAl/sub 2//oxide/Al,Al/oxide/AuIn/sub 2/, or Au/Al/sub 2//oxide/ AuIn/sub 2/ tunnel junctions. The tunnel barriers were produced by rf sputter oxidation. The temperature dependence of the energy gaps of the AuAl/sub 2/ and AuIn/sub 2/ films was measured and found to agree well with BCS theory.
