Photomultiplier dark pulses

Dark pulse distributions from three types of photomultiplier have been fitted to Poisson distributions, both for pulses originated by single electrons and for larger pulses. These distributions can be used to determine the first-dynode secondary-emission coefficients, the fraction of electrons that create positive ions, the number of secondary electrons created by each positive ion, and the rate of output pulses above a fixed discriminator level.
