The pulse-height variations in a fast-response photomultiplier are studied by injecting two independent random variables which determine the form of the anode pulses. The energy of each pulse, directly dependent on gain and its variance, is the first variable; pulse heights varying according to this variable are further dependent on pulse width, which is the second variable. The results obtained in peak pulse amplitude variation with a fast pulse widening circuit, and those bearing on the statistical variations of gain, are compared to demonstrate that the relative variance of peak pulse amplitude is greater than that of gain. In the above measurements, the effects of the secondary emission coefficient of the first dynode and those of the average secondary emission coefficient of the multiplier are shown. (auth)
