System for simultaneous gamma-gamma formation density logging while drilling

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5922995
A gamma radiation formation density logging apparatus is described for use in a borehole traversing an earth formation, comprising: an elongated sonde having a longitudinal axis; a source of gamma radiation located within the sonde; a gamma radiation detection assembly within the sonde, including gamma radiation detectors. At least two of the detectors are sensitive to gamma rays resulting from Compton scattering. The two detectors are spaced the same distance in the same longitudinal direction from the radiation source along the sonde and also are located symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the sonde; means connected to each of the at least two gamma radiation detectors for producing first output signals from each of the at least two detectors; means to provide an indication of the density of the fluid in the borehole; and means responsive to the first output signals from the detectors and to the indication of the borehole fluid density for producing an additional output signal proportional to the density of the formation surrounding the borehole in the region of the sonde.
