Formation density logging while drilling

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5864813
A rotating device is described for use in a borehole traversing an earth formation comprising: a gamma ray emitting means. The means emits a collimated gamma ray beam along a first trajectory. The beam intersects a first circle located in a sample of the formation to be measured. A first gamma ray detecting means is oriented to receive emitted gamma rays scattered from locations within the first circle. A means is provided for counting the received gamma rays during I preselected periods of time. Each period is equal and commencing each 360/sup 0//I of rotation, and wherein I is an integer which is at least three; and a means is also provided for determining a first product of the counts of gamma rays received by the first detecting means during the I time periods to provide an indication of the average density of the formation sample.
