Hydraulically activated firing head for well perforating guns
Apparatus for firing a perforating gun, suspending by a tubing string and a set packet at a selected location in a subterranean well, is described. It consists of: a tubular housing assembly attachable tat its upper end to the set packer; a perforating gun secured to the lower end of the tubular housing assembly; a percussion detonatable primer for the perforating gun; means mounting the primer above the perforating gun and in the interior of the tubular housing assembly, the tubular housing assembly defining a first annular, axially elongated, fluid pressure chamber in the interior of the tubular housing assembly; the first fluid pressure chamber being fillable with a clean, light density, compressible fluid at the well surface; water leg means communicating between the top portion of the first fluid pressure chamber and the well annulus surrounding the tubular housing assembly, thereby imposing well hydrostatic pressure on the clean fluid in the first fluid pressure chamber; and axially extending cylinder chamber defining a bore; an axially elongated piston-free firing pin slidable and sealably mounted in the bore of the cylinder chamber; the tubular housing assembly defining a second fluid pressure chamber above the firing pin.
