Performance of a forward steam-drive project Nugget reservoir, Winkleman Dome Field, Wyoming

Most of the attention regarding steam injection has concerned the cyclic steam injection projects in California. The Winkleman Dome Nugget reservoir in Fremont County, Wyo., does not have the thickness, porosity or permeability existing in most of the successful cyclic steam injection projects. On the other hand, the reservoir is shallow, has a high oil saturation and contains a viscous crude--conditions that should result in a response to forward steam drive. Forward steam-drive operations have been conducted for about 3 yr. With a steam injection rate of 20,000 lb/hr, the 12 producers of six 10-acre 5-spots are yielding about 530 bopd. Despite the existence of steam channeling, it appears that at least 50% of the oil in place will be recovered from those areas affected by heat. As of Jan. 1, 1968, oil recovery has been 391,000 bbl. Of this amount, at least 220,000 bbl are thought to be the result of steam injection.
