A highly stable dye laser pumped by a coaxial flash lamp
Comparative studies are conducted on the quality of a beam (its divergence, and spectral stability) from a pulse dye laser with coaxial, triaxial and quadraxial construction. The pumping source is a coaxial flash lamp with a supply energy of 450 joules (1.5 microfarads, 25 kilovolts). The best beam quality (a divergence of 1 microradian, a spectral width of 5 times 10/sup -2/ nanometers and a wavelength fluctuation of 4 times 10/sup -3/ nanometers at a pulse repetition frequency of .5 hertz) is achieved using quadraxial geometry in which the lamp is separated from the dye dish by a jacket containing a water coolant and by a vacuum gap. Special assemblies are added to the laser design for creating axially symmetric dye flows through the dish.
