The objective of the work conducted under Department of Energy is to provide practical methods for detecting incipient faults and locating degradation sites in energized and deenergized underground power transmission cable systems. Methods using radio-frequency (rf) sounding techniques are emphasized. Supporting tasks include (a) measuring cable characteristics at experimental facilities and utility installations, (b) evaluating equipment in the field, (c) developing signal couplers to access transmission lines, and (d) studying methods leading to the technically effective and economical use of incipient-fault detector/locator units. The contract has led to the development and construction of two different prototype rf cable sounding systems. One system uses swept-frequency rf sounding techniques. The second system uses high-voltage (h-v) crossmodulation sounding techniques. Both systems are available to support further field-application studies and cable measurement studies.
