A one-acre 5-spot pilot was installed in a previously waterflooded zone in the Benton field to provide a field test of a chemical flooding process found successful in laboratory experiments. The pilot involved drilling of 5 process wells, 3 observations wells, and 4 evaluation core holes. Operations were conducted over a period of approx. 2 yr with an average injection rate of 80 bbl per well per day. There were 4 injection phases: (1) a preflood of low salinity water to displace the high salinity formation water from the vicinity of the injection wells, (2) a slug of chemical solution containing a surfactant, a builder, and a mobility control agent, (3) a mobility controlled drive solution, and (4) an ordinary waterflood with fresh water. The pilot resulted in increased recovery with oil cut increasing from approx. 1% during preflood injection to more than 10% after introduction of the chemical slug. Total recovery amounted to approx. 125 bbl per acre ft compared to an expected volume of 235 bbl per acre ft. Evaluation core holes indicated that oil displacement was limited to the lower part of the target zone.
