United States energy alternatives to 2010 and beyond: the CONAES study

Journal Article · · Annu. Rev. Energy; (United States)
The Committee on Nuclear and Alternative Energy Systems (CONAES) analyzed and assessed the US energy future and the role of nuclear power. The study reviews present energy supplies, develops scenarios and explores techniques for moderating demand growth in each sector, and projects the impact of supply policies on the development of domestic energy resources. Nuclear energy's role as an intermediate source is treated separately because of the special considerations involved. The report concludes that the breeder option should be maintained. The study examines the supply potential, environmental risks, and the socio-economic impacts of each energy source and recommends policies that will reduce energy growth without sacrificing either gross national product or non-energy consumption patterns. A balance of coal-fired and nuclear power plants is recommended as alternatives to liquid fuels in the mid-term. Coal-fired power generation is identified as having the highest overall risk to public health and safety. More research on the environmental impacts of solar and hydroelectric energy production is recommended. 56 references.
