This article is a summary of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Nuclear and Alternative Energy systems (CONAES) study. The CONAES study emphasized the challenges facing the United States in the medium term, when the country will have to make a transition from major dependence on fossil hydrocarbons to utilization of other available or renewable energy sources. Energy conservation was recommended to be given the highest priority because of its potential for assisting in a smooth transition. High energy prices were noted to be a key factor in obtaining that transition. On the supply side, the CONAES study advised that nuclear power and coal are the only large-scale alternatives to oil and gas in the near term. Citing some of the constraints to coal and nuclear deployment, the study emphasized that truly sustainable or renewable energy sources need to be developed. Key remarks contained in the CONAES study that deal with OPEC countries are highlighted without comment. (SAC)
