One of the disadvantages of steam stimulation for heavy oil producers is formation damage resulting from mineral dissolution and precipitation and clay swelling. Quartz is easily dissolved at the high temperatures associated with steam injection and results in dissolution of the gravel pack normally associated with injection wells. Likewise, unless the pH of the injection fluid approximates that in the reservoir, the fluid can cause clay swelling and subsequent closure of the existing pore spaces in the adjacent annulus and reservoir itself. This paper describes methods of utilizing lower pH steam injection while using more dissolution-resistant packing material in the injection well.
