Powerful millimeter-wave generators based on the stimulated Cerenkov radiation of relativistic electron beams

An experimental evaluation has been made of effective relativistic Cerenkov generators, such as orotrons, surface wave oscillators, and Smith-Purcell free electron masers. Single mode generation was obtained in multimode systems by both electron and electrodynamic methods of mode selection, and yielded 100 MW at 8.6 mm. In the multimode regime, 0.5 MW was obtained at 0.9 mm. Attention to the dependence of generation output on focusing magnetic field values revealed the presence of cyclotron power absorption zones earlier observed in cm-wave generators. 25 references.
