Switzerland and other European countries with an ongoing nuclear program are confronted with a formidable challenge: on the one hand, the accumulation of radioactive wastes from operating plants, on the other hand, a strong public opposition to any siting of disposal facilities. How are these countries tackling the issue Reviewed in this paper are Switzerland and several relevant countries of the European Economic Community (EEC), namely France, Germany, United Kingdom and Belgium. Are considered as low and intermediate level waste all categories of radioactive waste originating from operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants and fuel cycle facilities, from reprocessing of spent fuel and from applications in medicine, industry and research, as long as they consist primarily of short-lived Beta/[gamma] radionuclides with a restricted amount of [alpha]-radionuclides and with negligible heat generation.
