Current situation regarding the European coal industries

Journal Article · · World Coal; (United States)

The location and size of the coalfields of the European Economic Community (EEC) is shown. The major and most profitable areas are the Midlands and Yorkshire of the United Kingdom, (UK), Lorraine in France, and the Ruhr in the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). In addition West Germany has by far the major brown coal industry located largely around Nordrhein--Westfalen. EEC hard coal production during 1976 was 248,000,000 tons, a fall of 3 percent compared to the previous year. Each of the major coal mining countries of the UK, West Germany, Belgium and France recorded a fall in output, continuing the trend experienced over the last few years. In order to reverse the downward trend in production, large increases in capital expenditure are planned, particularly in the profitable coalfields. Major projects are envisaged for UK, West Germany and France. A new subsidy system for encouraging coal production has been suggested which might fulfill these main objectives.
