Book ·
OSTI ID:5909041
This book was developed from a symposium held at Asilomar, CA from 28 November to 2 December 1982. The introductory chapter describes the chemistry of SO/sub 2/, its history as a plant damaging agent, and the prospects for emission trends and problems in the future. There are four chapters on the issues of pollution management policy, while the remaining chapters deal with the effects of SO/sub 2/ at several levels of biological organization. These include seven chapters on plant metabolism, 10 chapters on plant growth, seven chapters on plant communities, and two summary chapters. The section on pollution management policy contains the views of a representative of the power generation industry, a federal land manager concerned with protection of national parks and monuments and several economists who deal with a framework within which the economic worth of crop yield-response may be assessed.
