This bill would establish a national advanced civilian reactor research, development, and demonstration program to make available new, improved, and economical nuclear energy generation units, and to give strategic focus to existing programs in nuclear fission research at the Department of Energy. The bill appropriates 12 million dollars for each of the years 1992-4 for activities in connection with evolutionary advanced reactors; 125 million dollars for each of the same years for activities in connection with near-term advanced reactors and necessary supporting facilities; and 175 million dollars for the same three years for activities in connection with long-term advanced reactors and necessary supporting facilities. The bill encourages minimizing the volume of nuclear waste requiring disposal and improving nuclear reactor waste technology and management.
