Radiation sterilization and its place in a series of drug sterilization methods

Journal Article · · High Energy Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5906561
The authors base this work on the results of a survey in which they discussed the theoretical and applied problems involved in the use of ionizing radiation for the production of sterile medicinal preparations, showing that drugs can be irradiated under conditions permitting high reliability of sterilization without significant change in the physicochemical and biological properties of the preparation. Here the authors compare the basic indices of the process of using radiation treatment in pharmaceutical production and the characteristics of other sterilization techniques used in industry to establish the feasibility of an extensive introduction of radiation methods. Since the sterilization and partial decontamination techniques used in practice against microorganisms differ significantly, the question is applied to each problem separately.
