Oil supply disruptions in the 1980s: an economic analysis

The West is concerned that the Persian Gulf nations, which produce about 40% of the noncommunist world's oil, are vulnerable to internal and external destabilization. The author proposes a series of policies to reduce and minimize the effects of any disruption in the Persian Gulf oil supply. After reviewing the historical, political, and economic factors contributing to the region's instability, he analyzes the magnitude and costs of a disruption for several probable scenarios. He recommends countervailing policies for the oil-importing states for the short and medium term and economic integration for the Gulf states for the longer run, a process which would include a rationalization of economic development. 52 references, 3 figures, 30 tables.
